An update of the classic movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is in the works at NBC.

The network is working on a two-hour movie, tentatively titled "The Legends of Butch & Sundance," that would chronicle the lives of the Western outlaws from the time they first met. If the movie does well, it might be picked up as a series, according to news reports.

Newcomers David Rogers and Ryan Browning will play Butch and Sundance, following in the very large footsteps of Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Rachelle Lefevre ("Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" ) will play Sundance's girlfriend, Etta.

The movie, produced by Viacom Productions and Once Upon a Time Films, is scheduled to start shooting later this month in Canada. John Fasano ("Profiler," "Darkness Falls" ) wrote the script. Sergio Mimica, an assistant director on several Steven Spielberg films who helmed an episode of Sci Fi's "Taken," will direct.

"Butch Cassidy" was a box-office hit in 1969 and went on to win four Oscars, including one for William Goldman's screenplay.
